What is a refractory material?

A material that can withstand the heat of one thousand and several hundreds degrees Celsius

Refractory = Fire-resistant Materials such as iron, steel, cement, and glass used for things all around us are produced through manufacturing processes at high temperatures ranging from hundreds of degrees to one thousand and several hundreds degrees Celsius.
In furnaces for making iron/steel, glass, etc., the channels through which the molten iron/steel, or glass pass and pans receiving them must be made of materials that can withstand high heat as well as chemical erosion.

Now, material that can withstand such high heat is “refractory.” This material is resistant to fire and it is generally said that the heat resistance level is about 800 to 2,000°C.

Refractories produced by Krosaki Harima

*Unshaped refractories contribute to the reduction of CO2 emissions because there is
 no process of firing and hardening and the manufacturing ratio of these materials
 is thus steadily increasing.

Applications:All channels for molten iron/steel

The following figure shows processes for making iron and steel. Since hot molten iron/steel passes through the facility until the iron/steel is hardened, refractories are required at all places with which the molten iron/steel is brought into contact. Though the facility appears to be made of iron/steel only from the outside, the facility can only withstand high heat when refractories are used inside.
