THINREX™ Shape

Features of THINREX™

THINREX™ is a flat-shaped submerged entry nozzle designed for thin slab continuous casting in steelmaking. By controlling molten steel flow inside the mold, it enables high-speed casting and superior steel quality.

Ironmaking Process

As casting speed increases, molten steel flow inside the mold tends to become unstable, making it more difficult to maintain steel quality.
THINREX™ uses Krosaki Harima’s proprietary design to stabilize molten steel flow inside the mold and support high-speed casting while maintaining high steel quality.

Background

Benefits of THINREX™

1 Proprietary Design for Optimized Molten Steel Flow

By combining CFD analysis, which simulates fluid flow on a computer, with water model testing using physical models, THINREX™ fine-tunes the shape of the discharge ports to achieve optimized molten steel flow inside the mold.

2 High-Speed Casting with Superior Steel Quality

As casting speed increases, molten steel flow inside the mold tends to become unstable, making it more difficult to maintain steel quality.

THINREX™ stabilizes molten steel flow even during high-speed casting, enabling the production of high-quality steel with improved productivity.

3 Reduced Molten Steel Surface Fluctuation and Minimized Quality Defects

Molds used in thin slab continuous casting are characterized by very high flow velocities near the meniscus, causing the molten steel surface to fluctuate significantly.

Such fluctuation can lead to the entrainment of inclusions that adversely affect steel quality and cause defects in downstream processes.

THINREX™ is designed to control molten steel flow stably, reducing meniscus fluctuation and minimizing defects caused by inclusions.

4 Optimization for Customer-Specific Casting Conditions

The specifications and operating conditions of continuous casting machines vary from customer to customer, making it difficult for a single conventional nozzle shape to accommodate a wide range of requirements.

THINREX™ was developed by narrowing down promising designs through CFD analysis and repeatedly verifying them through full-scale water model testing. As a result, THINREX™ offers a proprietary structure that can be applied to various thin slab continuous casting machines while maintaining a highly optimized nozzle design.
